Australian video rentals to rise 9pc

This growth is driven largely by an upturn in rental spending in Japan and North America through online subscriptions (dominated by Netflix) and rental kiosks.

The Australian experience is different, despite the early growth of DVD kiosks.

The study notes the number of Australian rental stores remains steady at 1730 after a minor rationalisation earlier this decade from about 2100 stores.

The average rental outlay per transaction was $8.59 last year and stores averaged 56,538 transactions in the year, a figure that might surprise other retailers.

With the introduction of at least three more IPTV set-top boxes competing against PlayStation 3, Xbox Live, Foxtel and Austar within the year for the digital download market, the rental industry is likely to look somewhat different this time next year.
